The Alabama Legislative Sunset Review Committee voted yesterday to present to the legislature changes aimed at overhauling the Alabama Board of Pharmacy (ALBOP).
Alabama Independent Pharmacy Alliance (AIPA) appreciates the Committee members’ attention to this issue and applauds the effort to address the actions and the processes that led to a lack of transparency and accountability at ALBOP. The Committee’s decision marks a step toward a more fair, transparent environment for pharmacy practitioners in Alabama.
The Alliance would like to encourage the legislature to take a step further in easing the challenges faced by independent pharmacies in our state. That next step is examining the anticompetitive practices of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) that are aimed at eliminating Alabama-owned pharmacies in the name of the PBMs’ monopolistic goals. We urge legislators to talk to pharmacy owners in their districts to understand the hostile landscape that forces those pharmacies to struggle to care for the citizens of Alabama, and to act to provide a fair market for those pharmacies in our state.
